Welcome back to my crochet adventure: A Hippie Sweater I only have a photograph of. 

Thanks for all your comments. You make me want to finish this sweater quickly because I’d like to wear it soon. 

The next part of my hippie sweater was a bit difficult as it inculudes the shape of the shoulders and neck. As I didn’t know how to do it exactely, I crocheted a granny square #13 of Jan Eatons book next, then added the top part up to the shoulder in olive. Next was a row of trebble corchets along the olive part and the granny square followed by an orange square and a dark green part I had  to crochet by following the shape of the neck whole and to connect with the orange square. Crocheting irregular shapes involves a lot of improvising. I lost track of how many times I had to frogg and do it again. Finally I was satisfied. 

Der nächste Teil war ziemlich schwierig, weil ich sowohl die Schulterschräge und den Halsausschnitt häkeln musste. Zuerst häkelte ich ein Granny, und zwar Nr. 13 aus dem Buch von Jan Eaton. Dann fügte ich den oberen Teil mit der Schulterschräge in olive an und häklete eine blaue Doppelstäbchenreihe über beide Teile nach unten. Es folgte ein oranges Quadrat 2 Stäbchen, 2 Luftmaschen im Wechsel und in der folgenden Reihe versetzt. Im dunklegrünen Teil darüber musste ich einerseits der Linie des Halsausschnittes folgen und das orange Quadrat anhäkeln. Irgendwann klappte es dann, so dass ich zufrieden war. Wenn man unregelmässige Formen häkelt, braucht es viel Improvisation.

I’ve chosen pink for the other half of the top part of the front and crocheted a filet grid, again following the shape of the neck. You can see how I made it on the next photograph. It’s a bit of a challenge to get the measurements right if you use different stitches like double and trebble crochets. But I got it right eventually. The last piece I’ve chosen turquoise for was easy. The pink and turquoise only need sewing together. 

Dann wählte ich nach reiflicher Überlegung pink als nächste Farbe und häkelte die zweite Hälfte des Halsausschnittes. Auf dem unteren Foto kann man sehen, dass ich den grünen Teil als Musterrundung verwendete. Es ist nicht ganz einfach, dass es aufgeht, wenn man verschiedene Maschen, also zum Beispiel Stäbchen und Doppelstäbchen mischt. Aber schliesslich stimmte es. Fürs letzte, einfache Stück wählte ich Türkis, und muss es nur noch an das pinke Teil nähen.

After this rather difficult part, I wanted to relax a bit. Therefore, I thought to make the bottom edge first and in the same way  I did the sleeves. I made 12 granny squares in different colours, which I joined as I went and added two rows in pink and a third and a shell edge in white. 

Danach wollte ich mich ein bisschen entspannen und habe deshalb zuerst den unteren Rand genau gleich wie an den Ärmeln gehäkelt. Mein Pulli wird ca. 50 cm breit, wozu ich 12 Grannies benötige. Danach kommen zwei Reihen pink und ein weiss im Grannymuster, dann ein Muschelrand in weiss zum Abschluss.

I haven’t done the back, which I will before I start the middle part of my  hippie sweater. There is still enough yarn.

Hollywood swing has sound magical since my childhood. Whenever I had the opportunity, I enjoyed the swinging bench. Last time in Vienna at Johanna’s, but this was years ago. I always wanted my own swing, which is an expensive purchase for a child. However, I’ve found reasons not to buy one again and again.

Hollywood Schaukel tönt seit meiner Kindheit irgendwie magisch. Wann immer sich irgendwo die Gelegenheit ergab, setzte ich mich auf die schaukelnde Bank und genoss die sanfte Bewegung. Das letzte Mal bei Johanna in Wien, was auch schon Jahre zurück liegt. Immer schon wollte ich eine eigene haben. Für ein Kind eine zu teure Anschaffung, klar. Aber auch später gab es immer wieder Gründe, die Schaukel nicht zu kaufen.

40 Jahre Überlegen, Gründe dafür und dagegen Suchen, sind genug. Jetzt habe ich es endlich getan! Meine Hollywood Schaukel ist wunderschön. Zusammenbauen war gar nicht so schwierig. Gestern spielte nur das Wetter nicht mit. Wir sind hier halt in Oberheimen, wo’s schon den ganzen Frühling lang regnet. Aber heute morgen früh scheint endlich die Sonne, da stelle ich die Schaukel unter den Nussbaum, setze mich drauf, schaue an den Waldrand runter und höre den Vögeln zu, trinke Kaffee, während ich leise hin und her schwinge. Ich bleibe da den ganzen Tag!

40 years of pondering and balancing reasons are enough. I finally did it! Thank you, Meredith, for being my role model. My Hollywood swing is beautiful. I’m more than happy, I’m thrilled. Only the swing was built up in the barn because the weather wasn’t nice yesterday. We are in Oberheimen where it has been raining all spring. But early this morning the sun is finlally shining. Therefore, I’m putting the swing under the walnut tree (with my husband’s help). I’m sitting there, drinking coffee, enjoying the birds singing and the view.

I’m spending the whole day on it!

Ich erinnere mich, dass meine Mutter fast immer Wolle wickeln musste, wenn sie für uns Kinder etwas strickte. Es gehörte einfach dazu. Meistens mussten wir ihr dabei helfen und den Wollstrang halten, bis uns die Arme abfielen. Kein Wunder also, dass ich Jahre später im Semi den Wollwicklerwettbewerb gewann. Ich wurde Königin der Wollwicklerinnen.

Sock yarn has always come in this typ of skeins, my favourites. Mostly, you dig into it and can find the beginning of the thread easyly. Then you knit along smoothly without any entanglement. It is no surprise that the skeins you have to wind first disappeared.

Schon immer wurde Sockenwolle in solchen Strangen verkauft, meine liebsten übrigens. Meistens ist es einfach, den Anfang zu finden. Man muss nur ein bisschen im Innern der Strange “guseln”, das Innere vorsichtig nach aussen ziehen und voilà, ein kleines Knäueli kommt heraus, wenn man daran zieht. Meistens. Es ist keine Überraschung, dass die Strangen, die man zuerst wickeln muss, nach und nach verschwanden.

But now, they are back, probabely because there are more and more hand dyed yarns available. Therefore, I am back to ball winding. Whereas my mother always have had helpers, I don’t, like many others. I’ve heard some complain about this. They dread ball winding because it always ends up in an entaglement needing a lot of time. That’s why I was thinking about telling you how I wind skeins. 

Nun sind sie jedoch wieder da, vermutlich, weil es immer mehr handgefärbte Wolle im Angebot hat. Deshalb bin auch ich wieder zurück zum Wollwickeln gekommen. Während meine Mutter jedoch viele Helfer fand, bin ich auf mich alleine angewiesen. Ich habe einige Strickerinnen sich beklagen gehört. Sie fürchten das Wollwickeln, weil es immer in einem grossen Haufen verwickelter Wolle führt und viel Zeit und Nerven kostet. Deshalb dachte ich, dass ich zeigen könnte, wie ich meine Wollstrangen wickle.

Years ago I developed a technique to wind balls without any device and help from others smoothly and quickly. You have to sit on a sofa (you will find out why a chair is not as good) and lay the entwisted yarn around your knees. The skein must be placed as parallel as possible. Then you can play a bit with your knees encreasing and loosen the tention. You will find out how much tension is needed while winding. 

Vor Jahren schon habe ich eine Technik entwickelt, wie ich Wolle alleine und ohne Hilfsmittel und unwillige Familienmitglieder wickeln kann. Man setzt sich dazu auf ein Sofa (du findest heraus, warum ein Stuhl nicht so gut geeignet ist) und legst den Strang um deine Kniee, so dass die Fäden möglichst parallel liegen. Dann kannst du ein bisschen mit den Beinen spielen, die Spannung erhöhen und wieder lösen. Du wirst herausfinden, wieviel Spannung nötig ist, wenn du wickelst.

Find the beginning of the yarn and start winding it from the top. If the thread disapears under the many thready around your knees and you would have to pull, turn the skein a bit. On the picture you see that the skein is perfect on the left side but not on the right.

Zuerst musst du allerdings den Anfang finden und beginnst von oben nach unten zu wickeln. Wenn der Wollfaden unter den anderen verschwindet und du stark ziehen müsstest, dreh den Strang ein bisschen. Du siehst auf dem Foto, dass der Strang auf der linken Seite schön daliegt, auf der rechten aber nicht.

Winding yarn this way is a bit of exercise because you have to bend forwards and backwards a bit along the way. Your hands holding the ball and winding the yarn go around your knees. I hold the ball with my right hand, my left hand holds the thread coming from the skein. I go against the clock. 

Wolle wickeln ist eine Gymnastikübung, denn du musst deinen Oberkörper ein bisschen vorwärts und rückwärts bewegen. Deine Hände, die rechte hält den Knäuel, die linke den Faden, der vom Strang kommt gehen um die Kniee herum. Ich gehe gegen den Uhrzeigersinn, vermutlich weil ich Rechtshänderin bin.

As I don’t want to wind the yarn to tight I wind the yarn around my fingers about 25 times. Then I take the fingers out, turn the ball a bit and wind for another 25 times or so. And so on. 

The “Spinning Martha” yarn (colour: Heuernte = Hay Harvest) was winded without any problems yesterday until the very, very end. 

Die “Spinning Martha” Wolle (Farbe: Heuernte = Heuet in Schweizerdeutsch) war ganz einfach zu wickeln. Der Strang lag bis ganz, ganz zum Schluss schön um meine Beine.

I have a list for items I look for when I go to the thrift store. Unfortunately, I haven’t been successful the last times I went there hunting for things. However, I found an additional yarn (dark orange) for my hippie sweater in the thrift store yesterday and bought two balls although yarn hasn’t been on the list. The yarn isn’t the same brand but almost identical.

Ich habe eine Liste von den Dingen, nach denen ich im Brocki suche. Leider war ich nicht gerade erfolgreich die letzten Male, als ich dort war. Immerhin, ergatterte ich zwei Knäuel Baumwollgarn, obwohl das nicht auf der Brocki-Liste steht. Das dunkle Orange passt aber bestens in die bereits breite Farbpalette. Das Garn ist nicht die gleiche Marke, aber fast identisch.

Now to my work in progress, which is quite challenging: The progress is described best as “try and error”. There is much error involved and I have to frog a lot. I ended up going for red after the turquoise after trying white and pink. I also chose a different pattern. Now the sleeves are both finished and I’m already crocheting small parts of the front and back. 

Nun aber zu meinem Werk, das langsam Fortschritte macht. Der Prozess kann am besten mit “Versuch und Irrtum” beschrieben werden. Viel Irrtum, denn ich muss oft auftrennen.  Ich habe mich schliesslich für rot nach dem türkis entschieden nach zwei Versuchen mit weiss und rosa. Die Ärmel sind jetzt fertig, und bereits häkle ich kleine Teile für Rücken- und Vorderteil. Doch davon das nächste Mal.

Nein, ich ernte nicht vor dem Herbst. Aber der Bluescht sieht sehr vielverprechend aus. Es wird bestimmt ganz viele von meinen Lieblingen, den Garvensteinern, geben. Ich finde, dass jeder Sonnentag in diesem Frühling einen roten Punkt im Kalender verdient. Oder einen Blogeintrag. Ist blauer Himmel nicht wunderschön?

No, I don’t harvest before fall. But the blossoms look promising. There will be lots of my favourites, the Gravensteiners. I think that a sunny day this spring is worth a blog post. Blue sky is beautiful, isn’t it? 

Zeit, ins Bett zu gehen – Time to go to bed.

Actually, there is a lot of froging involved. Finally, I noticed a mistake and tried to ignore it. No success, I cannot look around mistakes. I froged again. Sigh! But nontheless,  I’m progressing. I added a green border to the edge of the sleeves. First step of the hippie sweater can be seen here. 

Seufz! Immer mal wieder muss ich eine Runde aufribbeln, weil die Maschenzahl nicht stimmt oder die ganze Arbeit zu bockig wird. Und schliesslich habe ich ganz weit unten einen Fehler entdeckt, den ich zuerst einfach ignorieren wollte. Hat nicht geklappt, also nochmals auftrennen. Trotzdem bin ich ein bisschen weiter gekommen. Auf der einen Seite der Grannysquare-Manschette habe ich eine grüne Borte angehäkelt. Der Anfang des Hippie-Pullovers ist übrigens hier beschrieben.

On the other side of the granny squares I went on with apricot and crocheted one row of single crochets and one of trebble crochets (52). Then I chose blue, made a row of single crochets and nine rows of filet crochet.  I made a few increases to gain width.

With turquiose I crocheted one row of single crochets (60) and one row of trebble crochets. I’ve tried twice until I had the right amount of stitches. The sleeves are now 23 cm long and 32 cm wide. I’m not sure yet which colour to choose. White, red or pink? What do you think?

Eine Runde fest Maschen, dann eine Runde Doppelstäbchen in Türkis. Auch hier musste ich zuerst ausprobieren, wieviele Maschen ich zwischen die Stäbchen der Vorrunde häkeln soll, damit der Ärmel schön flach liegt und regelmässig zunimmt. Die Ärmel sind jetzt 23 cm lang und 32 cm weit. Noch habe ich nicht entschieden, mit welcher Farbe ich weiter mache. Weiss, rot oder pink?

Meine Söhne mutierten allesamt zu Nagetieren, wenn sie an ihren Hausaufgaben sassen. Als sie auszogen, liessen sie Spuren ihrer Mühen zurück. Nur, wer hat Lust, die angenagten Hässlichkeiten zu benützen, auch wenn sie durch aus noch brauchbar sind?  Sie sind zu schade zum Wegwerfen, und trotzdem will ich mich nicht mit dem begnügen, was andere übrig gelassen haben. Muss ich auch nicht. Nicht mehr. Doch schaut selber.

My sons morphed into rodents when they had to do their homework. When they moved out, they left crayons behind nobody is fond to use anymore although they are long and do a proper job. However, it would be a shame to throw them away. I made them a new dress this afternoon. You could call it a silly Sunday afternoon amusement, but I like it. Are your children little rodents too? Are you a rodent? Here is the solution. 

Und so gehts – How I dressed up the crayons:

Schneide einen Papierstreifen von ca. 5 cm Breite und gewünschter Länge – Cut a slip of paper about 5 centimetres and as long as needed. 

Verdünnten Leim mit einem Pinsel überall auf das Papier streichen – Paint the glue onto the paper using a paintbrush. 

Papier satt um den Bleistift wickeln und auf einer Unterlage rollen – Wrap the paper around the crayon and roll it.

Die Stifte trocknen lassen, lackieren und zum Schluss anspitzen – Let the crayons dry, spray them with varnish and sharpen them. 

Der Sonntag ist schon fast vorbei. Ein bisschen schaut die Sonne raus, weshalb ich noch ein kleines Ründchen an der frischen Luft drehen werde. Euch allen einen guten Wochenstart!

Sunday is almost over. There is a tiny bit of sunshine. Therefore I’m going for a short walk breathing in fresh air. Wish you all a good start on Monday!

I’m sharing with The Selfsufficient Homeacre

Und plötzlich war es ganz einfach. Ich habe einfach angefangen; einen Knäuel aus dem Körbchen genommen und losgelegt. Erwartet hier keine Anleitung für einen Hippiepullover, aber ihr dürft gerne meinen Fortschritt mitverfolgen. Vielleicht motiviert euch das, gleichzeitig mit mir zu draufloszulegen. Einen Plan habe ich nicht wirklich, obwohl ich vor einiger Zeit ein Muster gezeichnet habe. Ich habe jedoch gemerkt, dass es vorallem für die Grössenangaben dienlich ist. Also ist rollende Planung angesagt. Ideen habe ich genug.

It has been easy eventually. I just started with the first ball from my basket. Don’t expect to find a tutorial how to crochet a Hippie sweater here, but you are invited to watch the sweater grow. You might be motivated to crochet along. Actually, I don’t have a real plan althought I draw a pattern a while ago, which is very useful for measurements. Otherwise I’m going with my guts, which is a hippie thing to do, I guess.  

Trotzdem ein paar Angaben – At least some information

Das Garn ist 100 % Baumwolle, heisst Linea 11 ALPHA von ON line, gekauft habe ich es bei Buttinette. Mir gefallen die leuchtenden Farben der grossen Palette. Im ganzen habe ich 13 Knäuel à 50 Gramm gekauft. Mal schauen, ob es reicht.

The yarn is 100 % cotton, its name Linea 11 ALPHA von ON line. I’ve bought it at Buttinett. What I especially like are the bright colours and the wide range of colours. I’ve bought 13 balls, 50 gramms each. Hopefully, this is enough. 

Aus meinen Kisten kommen je ein Knäuel rosa, rot und schwarz dazu, die alle drei etwa mit der gleichen Nadelstärke gehäkelt werden. Auf der Etikette steht 3.5 mm, ich nehme aber 4 mm, weil mich die Maschenprobe zu hart dünkte.

I’m using a bit from stash: a light pink, red and black. All three yarns are cotton, about the same weight. It is suggested to use a 3.5 mm hook, but I take a 4 mm one as the gauge has been too stiff for my taste. 

Schritt ＃1 – Step ＃1

Ich habe mich entschlossen, mit den Ärmeln zu beginnen. Vier Granny Squares (pink, olive, blau und violett), fortlaufend zusammengehäkelt ergeben nun einen Ring, der 24 cm Umfang hat, also genug Weite für den Unterarm oder das Handgelenk bedeutet.

I started with the sleeves. Four granny sqaures  in the colours pink, olive, blue and purple, 3 rounds, joined as you go. The band measures 24 cm in the round, which is enough around the wrist or forearm.

Fritz and Franz were playing football with my yarn making a lot of noise until I told them to go playing outside. It’s what you do with active and lively kids, don’t you? 

Fritz und Franz trieben mich in den Wahnsinn. Nichts als Unsinn im Kopf, wie zum Beipspiel meine Wollknäuel als Fussbälle zu verwenden. Da habe ich sie zum Spielen nach draussen gejagt.
