Schritt für Schritt – Step by Step

Eine Arbeitskollegin hat mir ihren super Nähfuss (Bernina Stitch Regulator) ausgehliehen. In den Ferien hatte ich jetzt Zeit und Musse, ihn auszuprobieren. Ich habe ein paar Videos geguckt, bei denen der Eindruck entsteht, quilten mit diesem Tool sei ein Kinderspiel. Nun, ich lasse mich im Schwierigkeitsgrad von textilen Handfertigkeiten kaum täuschen und setzte mein Ziel tief an: ich wollte ausprobieren, ob das Ding funktioniert, und ich wollte lernen.

1. Der Stitch Regulator funktioniert bei meiner Nähmschine in beiden Modi. Die Antirutschhandschuhe helfen beim Hin- und Herschieben der Arbeit.

2. Bei meinem Stoffblätz habe ich gelernt,

a) dass ich die Applikation besser aus einem weichen Stoff mache.

b) dass es einfacher für meine Augen (im Winter bei Kunstlicht) ist, wenn der Kontrast von Unterlage und Applikation stärker ist.

c) dass ich die drei Lagen vor dem Maschinenquilten mit Heftfaden fixiere, ausser ich verwende diesen extra Klebespray (verträgt sich schlecht mit meinem Ökogewissen).

d) dasss ich bestimmt nochmals einen Versuch mit der Applikation starte.

e) dass ich mir meinen eigenen Fuss kaufen werde, falls ich tatsächlich maschinenquilten möchte. Er kostet rund 600 Franken, bei Tutti gibt es einige zu günstigerem Preis.

f) Wenn ich die Technik wirklich anwenden will, muss ich noch viel üben. Der erste Schritt ist gemacht. Schrit für Schritt zur Meisterschaft.

I was given the opportunity to try out the Bernina Stich Regulator for quilting. I set the goals low in order to achieve them. Therefore I only wanted to see whether the foot would work, and I wanted to learn.

1. The stitch regulator works with my machine. I tried out both modes and used sticky gloves.

2. I have learnt a few things.

a) If I want to realy use this technique, I have to practise a lot more.

b) For the appliqué I better use a soft fabric.

c) It’s better for my eyes to have a stronger contrast.

d) Old sweater as a filling works perfectly.

e) I should fix the three layers better, maybe use a glue spray or sew by hand rather than using safety pins. They get in the way while quilting.

f) I most certainly are going to do another appliqué.

g) If I try the BSR again, I need my own. It costs the nice amount of 600 francs, but there are cheaper ones on Tutti or Ricardo. Anyway, I did the first step. I will see where the journey takes me. Step by step to mastery.

Ein Kissen für die Lesestunde – Literature Lesson Held in Style

Pünklich zum Semesterende wurden die 12 Yoga-, respektive Sitzkissen fertig. Yes! Das Muster habe ich von einem teuer gekauften Kissen abgenommen. Der Prozess hat mich ziemlich viele Nerven gekostet, denn die Arbeit war für die Schüler und Schülerinnen … zu schwierig. Als ich das realisierte, war es schon zu spät. Abbrechen war keine Option. Also musste ich es machbar machen.

We’ve finished the yoga cushions just in time. It’s the end of term and I’m teaching another group of students the next half of the year. I had copied the pattern from an expensive yoga cusion and I had thought it would be a good thing. But the process was rough, as the project was too difficult for the students. Not that they didn’t make it, mind you, but I had a hard time and needed nerves of steel, which I have of course. 😉

Wie sagte Antoine de Saint-Exupéry? „A goal without a plan is only a wish“. Vermutlich hat er es auf französisch gesagt, aber ich habe das Zitat gestern auf einem Englischen Blog entdeckt. Es bedeutet so viel wie, hast du ein Ziel, brauchst du einen Plan, um es zu erreichen.

We worked step by step through the process until we reached the goal. I did a lot of thinking and trying out each week. „A goal whithout a plan is just a wish“, as Antoine de Saint-Exuéry put it. I came across this quote yesterday and loved it so much that I wrote it onto the blackboard in my classroom. With the many experiences I have made over the last six months, I am starting into the next round in a week very confidently. Furhtermore, there are only girls in the next group, and belive me, it will be more relaxed, more quiet and easier for me.

Genau das haben wir getan. Schritt für Schritt. Muster zeichen, Innenkissen nähen, also Falten legen, heften, Kreisflächen annähen. Dann das Selbe noch einmal, aber mit bereits gesammelten Erfahrungen. Dazu kamen ein Tragehenkel und ein Reissverschluss. Ich bin zufrieden, wie die Kissen herausgekommen sind. Die SuS haben ihre Sitzfläche mit allem Möglichen verziert: Lionel Messi T-shirt, Yoda, Sponge Bob, Jaguar Flecken, Initialen, Skater und so weiter.

Anyway, the finished cusions are decorted with Lionel Messi’s shirt, Yoda, Sponge Bob, animal print, initials, a skater and so on. After I had corrected minor flaws, everybody is happy including me. However, my idea that the students would have a nice place to sit while reading books in school has failed: all students took their projects home. I don’t mind, as long as I have mine, literature lessons will be held in style. 😉

Die Idee, dass die Schüler und Schülerinnen dann ein bequemes Sitzkissen hätten, wenn sie lesen würden (nach den Freien beginnen wir mit dem Klassiker von Jules Verne), hat sich leider in Luft aufgelöst. Denn alle haben ihr Kissen mit nach Hause genommen. Aber ich will es ihnen nicht verübeln. Und ich habe ja meines. 🙂

Das Innenkissen ist aus Leintuch aus den Beständen meines Hauses genäht. Als Füllung habe ich Hanfspreu aus der Landi genommen, mega günstig und biologisch abbaubar. Die Hülle kann man also waschen.

Appliqué – Hawaiian Quilting – Lehrblätz

Der Sonntag neigt sich dem Ende entgegen. Obwohl der Schnee die Welt aufhellt, wird das Licht merklich schlechter. Kunstlicht ist nicht optimal, um eine feine Arbeit zu sehen. Da nützt auch die Lese- statt der Gleitsichtbrille nicht viel. Zudem habe ich ein Loch in der Mittelfingerbeere, das das dicke Ende der Nadel von alleine findet. Autsch! Jetzt habe ich genug und denke lieber darüber nach, was ich beim nächsten Blätz besser machen kann.

o Muster entwerfen mit der Scherenschnittmethode ist zeilführen.

o Die pinke Blume aufzukleben, war keine gute Idee. Ich denke, dass ich kleinere Stiche hinkriege, wenn der Appliqué-Stoff nicht so sperrig ist.

o Definitiv werde ich die Applikation mit dem Kopiergerät vergrössern. So kann ich den Rand mehr umfalten und das Nähen ist nicht ganz so nifelig.

o Als Füllung ein Stück von einem alten Pullover zu verwenden, war eine gute Idee.

Ich bin motiviert, gleich morgen wieder loszulegen. Diesmal eine weisse Blume auf gelbem Grund vielleicht? Am Nachmittag habe ich schulfrei, die Semesterzeugnisse sind geschrieben, die Buchhandlung, in der ich noch einen grossen Stapel Bücher für die neue Lektüre abholen muss, ist geschlossen.

A relaxing Sunday is almost over. I spent many hours stitchen although the finished appliqué is only 17 centimetres wide. Now the light is getting darker and I can’t see what I am doing anymore. Time to stop. Furthermore, the back of the needle findes the hole in my finger tip any time I push it through the fabric. Autsch! I’d rather think about what I can do better when making a second piece.

o I want to make the appliqué bigger in order to have more fabric to fold and stitch. Thanks to the photocopier in school no problem.

o The cut-out method works very well to get a nice pattern.

o Using vliesofix wasn’t a good idea. The pink fabric got too sturdy. I think I can make smaller stitches without glue.

o Using an old sweater as filling on the other hand was a very good idea.

I am motivated to start the second Hawaiian Appliqué Quilt tomorrow as I’m off school in the afternoon. All papers are graded, the reports ready to hand out and the bookstore where I have to pick up a pile of books for the students is closed.

Mola Technique – Vorzeigen und Fertigstellen

Zur Abwechslung mal ein bisschen Handnähen und Sticken. Mola Technik beinhaltet sowohl ausschneiden und die tiefere Schicht freilegen, als auch Applikation. Ich finde sowieso, alles ist erlaubt.

Do you know Mola technique? It’s from Panama. I like these traditionally colourful sewn pictures very much. Years ago I did some Mola work and have had it my studio since. Our visitor wanted to try out this technique. So I thought it was the right time to do a little project as well. That has turned out to be a bit bigger than small. 🙂

Was als Stück zum Vorzeigen anfing, ist schon bald ein fertiges Werk.

Noch fehlen das vierte Stück der Umrandung und ein paar Stiche. Aber vielleicht kommt es dann nochmals ganz anders. Wer weiss, vielleicht kann ich morgen damit aufwarten.

It isn’t finished yet. Hopefully, I can find the time to add the forth part of the frame and do a few more stitches. I’m looking for some beige fabric as soon as I press the „publish“ button. 

 

 

Molas – Das Schöne geniessen – Enjoying the Beauty

Seit ein paar Tagen quäle ich mich mit Rückenschmerzen und verbringe deshalb die meiste Zeit mit nichts tun, herumschleichen, im besten Fall spazierengehen. Meine Schaffenskraft ist enorm eingeschränkt. Heute morgen auf dem Boden liegend, die Wärmeflasche im Rücken, zur Decke starrend, den Blick wandern lassend, eröffneten sich jedoch neue Perspektiven. Es ist die Zeit der Unproduktivität, die Zeit, Produkte nicht herzustellen, sondern zu geniessen.

I’ve had a terrible backache for days and spend my time doing nothing, crowling through the house, sometimes going for a walk. I’m not the least bit creative. This morning lying on the carpet, hot water bottle under my back, staring at the cealing, I enjoyed a totally new outlook. It’s the time of non-productivity, the time not to make anything but to enjoy products. 

Seit Langem habe ich mal wieder meine Molas angeschaut. Ich habe mich schon so daran gewöhnt, dass gewisse Dinge einfach da sind, dass ich sie gar nicht mehr wahrnehme. Dabei sind sie in stundenlanger, gemütlicher Handarbeit entstanden. Höchste Zeit, dass ich mich wieder einmal daran zu erfreuen.

On the walls I noticed my molas, that I had made a while ago and haven’t seen in a long time because I am so used to them. They are handstitched during long hours. It’s high time to enjoy them again.

Guten Morgen, Samstag! – Good Morning, Saturday!

Guten Morgen, Samstag!

Ich blättere in meiner noch leeren Agenda 2015. Und weil ich heute viel Zeit habe, zücke ich die Filzschachtel und schneide lustige Applikationen zu.  Die ganze Agenda ist voll davon: Blümchen, Herzen, Vögel, Eulen, Bäume. Wie gemacht für mich.

Mal schauen, was das Wochenende sonst noch bringt. Der Samstag könnte jedenfalls nicht schöner beginnen.

Was die andern wohl treiben?

This day, this weekend, could not start better: I have plenty of time to do whatever I please. For a start, I am cutting some colourful felt. The book is full with those lovely appliqués: bird, flowers, owls, trees. Why haven’t I heard of Tula Moon before?

Vergiss die Hühner nicht! – Never Forget the Chickens at Night!

 

All you need are some scraps and your imagination to draw with fabric. Be brave, cut out shapes you want withhout drawing them and put them together. You can use whatever you like as a background. Voilà! 

Es braucht Reste und eine Idee, um mit Stoff zu malen. Sei mutig, schneide ohne vorzuzeichnen munter drauflos und setze die Teile zusammen. Lege sie auf eine Unterlage, die dir gefällt. Voilà!

 

I used glue spray to fix the pieces onto a piece of an old jeans and some green fabric. Then I sewed along the edges. See the back to understand how I did it. It’s some sort of machine quilting. 

Um die Teile ein bisschen zu fixieren, habe ich Leimspray genommen, dann mit dem Wiefelfüsschen und versenktem Transporteur den Schnittkanten entlang genäht.  So eine Art Maschinenquilten. Auf der Rückseite sieht man besser, wie es gemeint ist.

I also did some hand stitching. Die Füsse und Krallen stickte ich von Hand.

Now the picture hangs at the door where I can see it while having dinner. It replaces a poster I hung up to remind my son to never forget the chickens at night while my husband and I were away last week. Fox lives near by constantly hungry and looking for something to eat. Now it reminds me! 

Das kleine Bild hängt jetzt an der Tür zur Scheune, wo ich es vom Küchentisch aus sehen kann, wenn wir Znacht essen. Es ersetzt ein rudimentäres Poster, das meinen Sohn daran erinnern sollte, des Nachts die Hühner nicht zu vergessen, während mein Mann und ich letzte Woche weg waren. Fuchs wohnt in der Nähe und streunt auf der Suche nach Essbarem durchs Dörfli. Jetzt erinnert das Bild mich!
