In der Mittagssonne – Chickens in the Sun

Normalerweise kann es den Hühner nicht schnell genug gehen, bis sie auf die Wiese rennen können.

Usually, the chickens run head over heals into the wild when I open the trapdoor, but not today. 

They look nice after their moult. Much younger. Hopefully, they start laying eggs again soon. 

Im neuen Federkleid sehen wie wieder hübsch und viel jünger aus. Hoffentlich legen sie bald wieder Eier.

Übrigens hat sich jemand schon zweimal von unserem Katzenfutter aus der grossen Tonne bedient. Wir hätten es wohl nicht bemerkt, wenn die Tonne nicht offen und der Stein zum Beschweren daneben gestanden wären. Sachen gibt’s!

The White, Chipsy and Lola, our cats, didn’t want any food for dinner today, which made us very suspicious. When we checked on the food in the barn, the barrel was open. Again! Three days ago I though I had forgotten to close it myself. But now I know: someone is messing with our cat food in the barn. It’s one thing to take it, but another to let the barrel open. Should I set up a camera?

Samstags mit glücklichen Hühnern – Happy Chickens Running Freely

Heute war die Eierausbeute gross. Sieben Eier konnte ich greifen. Ich finde es interessant, dass sie alle verschieden sind, sowohl in der Grösse, als auch in Farbe und Form.

Due to the mild temperatures the hens laid many eggs. Seven out of nine is a rich bounty. I find it interesting how different the eggs look in shape, colour and size. They all taste delicious. 

Unsere Hühner laufen gerne frei. Sobald ich ans Gitter komme, rennen sie herbei und wollen hinaus. Das gibt’s nur in Oberheimen.

When I come to the gate the hens come close to greet me. They like to be out and about. Today I’m letting them run. 

Sie fressen gerne Gras. Mir soll’s recht sein, das spart Körner und die Hühner sind tatsächlich glücklich.

The are very busy looking for edible things. It dosn’t take long until I cant see them anymore. Are they behind the barn? In the bushes? At the neighbour’s? They eat grass like cows. Grass makes the yolk yellow.

Von Menschen, Hühnern und Bäumen – Of Men, Chickens and Trees

Manchmal dürfen die Hühner auf einen Ausflug. Der Nachbarsbub kommt dann jeweils angerannt und ruft: „Regula, Regula, dini Hüener sind dussä!“ Aber ich erkläre ihm dann, dass er ja auch nicht immer nur im Haus spielen will.

Sometimes my chickens are on a stroll around the property. They like it more than my neighbour’s little boy.

Auf meinem kleinen Ausflug heute Morgen bin ich nur ein paar Meter weit gekommen. Aus der Wund im alten Nussbaum ist wieder einmal ein Riesenpilz gewachsen. Der Baum ist krank, aber Franz sagt zum Besitzer: „Wänn du dä Baum fällsch, wachst am Paul sini Hand zum Grab uus.“

I didn’t go so far this morning. Just around the corner there is a huge walnut tree. There is a giant fungus in a big wound of the stem that has grown in only a few days. I mean the fungus is beautiful but it tells that the tree is sick.
